New Energy Star Ceiling Fan is Over 300% More Efficient! Having been in the ceiling fan business for over 20 years, it is rare that a new ceiling fan gets me excited. But while researching the efficiency ratings of the latest introductions this year, one model clearly stood out among all others. The Midway Eco from Emerson Electric, which is an impressive new Energy Star Ceiling Fan that is Over 300% More Efficient than other fans. This represents a major breakthrough in ceiling fan performance and technology, setting a new standard for energy efficient ceiling fans. Emerson developed an entirely new motor for the Midway Eco Ceiling Fans called the "EcoMotor TM". The EcoMotor TM uses up to 75% less energy compared to other ceiling fans. The blades have an airfoil shape for better aerodynamics and move up to 40% more air than typical fan blades. The built-in light uses four 13 watt fluorescent lamps to provide maximum illumination at a very low wattage. With these new innovations, the Emerson Midway Eco far surpassed the Energy Star testing requirements established by the EPA. As a matter of fact, the test results prove it to be over 3 times (or 300%) more energy efficient than any other Energy Star ceiling fans with lights. This means that the Midway Eco will move substantially more air while using a fraction of the electricity making it the ultimate choice for energy conscious consumers who wish to reduce their carbon footprint. Although Emerson does not claim that the Midway Eco is 300% more efficient than other fans, I made this observation myself after reviewing the test results published by the EPA, for ALL Energy Star Ceiling Fans with lights. In order for any ceiling fan to be Energy Star qualified, it must meet EPA standards for quality and durability. But most important, it must undergo a standardized testing procedure adopted by the EPA to calculate the efficiency of the fan. During the test, sensors measure the CFMs (Cubic Feet per Minute) of airflow the fan produces while recording the amount of electricity it consumes. The efficiency rating is calculated by dividing the CFMs produced by the Watts consumed (CFM/WATTS). This information is labeled on the fan packaging of every Energy Star ceiling fan giving consumers a standardized way of comparing the performance between different models. For such a comparison is critical for those who are energy conscious. As you will see in the data below, there are substantial differences in the efficiency ratings of many Energy Star ceiling fans. The data that I used to perform my analysis is published by the EPA and can be found at www.energystar.gov. If you wish to confirm my observations, download the spreadsheet under Ceiling Fans with Light Kits named "ceiling_fan_with_lightkit_prod_list.xls". Here are my findings based that data: There are 126 Energy Star ceiling fans in total, which represents all of the various finishes available for each model. I removed the finish variations to get to the actual base models since each finish is just a duplicate of the actual fan. This brought the total down to 33 Energy Star qualified ceiling fans with lights available in the USA from all brands combined. The table below represents my findings sorted by the most efficient to the least efficient. The Emerson Midway Eco is at the top with an efficiency rating of 620.20 CFM/Watt on Low Speed, 476.6 CFM/Watt on Medium and 289.0 CFM/Watt on High.

Choosing the Right Ceiling Fan For Your Room Thinking of installing a new ceiling fan in your room? Then you will need to know how to choose the right one. Unfortunately, choosing a ceiling fan is not as simple as some may thing; in addition to design and looks, there are many other factors you will need to take into consideration when assessing its suitability for your use. Here, we examine some of these factors. Purpose of the Ceiling Fan Before shortlisting the right fan to install in your room, youll need to be clear of its purpose. Will it be the only fan in the room or will it work in tandem with other ceiling fans? Will it be decorative or dual purpose- both for lighting and cooling the room? Commonsensical as it sounds, there are many who overlook this step only to regret their purchase decision because the fan they chose lacks the functionality needed. Size of the Room Size is the second thing to consider. The size of the room will be the main point of reference for choosing the size of your new ceiling fan. Even if you only intend the fan to be decorative, a tiny fan in a large room will look a little silly. The chart below is a standard room-to-fan reference that will help you make the right ceiling fan size choice: Room and Ceiling Fan Size Up to 64 sq. ft. - 36 or smaller 64 to 144 sq. ft. - 36 to 48 144 to 225 sq. ft. - 48 to 52 225 sq. ft. and above - 52 or larger Type of Mounting The next important consideration is mounting type. Your choice of mounting will almost always be dependent on your ceiling height. According the American Lighting Association, the ceiling fan should hang at least 7 above the floor, though 8 - 9 is best, if the ceiling is high enough to allow for that. Here is a description of the various mounting types and how to choose between them: Flush (Hugger Type) Mount - This is where the fan is anchored directly to the ceiling without the use of a downrod. This reduces the drop distance of the fan and is thus ideal for low ceilings or fans with low hanging lights. However flush mount ceiling fans do have a major drawback; the airflow is almost always somewhat restricted in such fans owning to the very short distance between the ceiling and fan blade. They are thus not suitable for rooms with higher ceiling as well as ceiling that are not flat. Standard Mount - These usually use a 3 to 5 inch downrod and are the most common for rooms with 8 to 9 ceiling height. Extended Mount - These are perfect for high or vaulted ceilings. The length of the downrod used is customized such that the fan is positioned between 8 to 9 above the floor for optimal airflow. Control Type Another factor to consider when choosing a ceiling fan is the choice of control types (i.e. pull chain, wall switch or remote control). The pull chain is often the cheapest and most basic alternative. If aesthetics is not a consideration, it is definitely a viable alternative. The remote control, on the other hand, is the most costly. This is not surprising because it is the most high tech option and offers the most convenience. A downside though this that the remote control can be easily misplaced especially if you have kids in the house. The middle ground solution is therefore the wall control; though not as convenient as the remote control, you will enjoy the convenience of always knowing where it is located (i.e. cant be misplaced). As can be seen, aesthetics though important, cannot be your only consideration when choosing ceiling fans. The purpose of the fan, size of your room, height of your ceiling and even choice of control type should all be taken into consideration too, especially if you want to choose a fan that is both beautiful and functional.

Buying the Right Ceiling Fans For Your Home The two primary concerns to address when looking for the right ceiling fans for your home are style and function. A related concern is the quality of the ceiling fans because these fixtures have a wide range of prices available and the price usually reflects the quality. Even if your home has central air conditioning, ceiling fans can be an attractive, elegant, and cost-saving addition. If your home is constructed with wood as the primary material and you have wooden flooring, ceiling fans with wooden blades that complement the type of wood used as flooring can add a real touch of class. A lighted ceiling fan mounted over the dining room table with wooden blades that match the table can provide the right decorating touch to make the dining experience more comfortable and relaxing. The light breeze generated by the fan can provide additional comfort when you are serving a number of people in a small area such as the dining room. Ceiling fans can be used throughout the house. In a family or living room they can provide a soft breeze and even additional lighting to make reading or other leisure activities more enjoyable. Bedrooms are ideal locations for ceiling fans. A soft, comforting breeze can help you relax and fall asleep and can provide an enjoyable experience when you wake up in the morning. Look in a variety of home and garden magazines for ideas regarding where and how to use ceiling fans throughout your home. Check the Internet for ceiling fan manufacturers websites. Many offer "tours" though a home that highlight the multitude of uses for ceiling fans. Let creativity and personal taste be your guide when deciding how to equip your home with these elegant fixtures. Air conditioning provides cooling but it doesnt give you the cool, comforting breeze you get from a ceiling fan. A reversible ceiling fan will provide a cooling effect in the hot summer months and push warm air down from the ceiling in the cold winter months, helping you save on heating costs. As you survey each room you are considering for a ceiling fan, keep in mind several factors. Make sure the size of the room dictates the blade width of the ceiling fan selected for that room. A lighting store, home center or Internet website that sells ceiling fans will be able to guide you in selecting the right size fan for the square footage of a particular room. Decide if you need the additional light that is provided by a ceiling fan that includes lighting fixtures. When in doubt, select a fan that has a separate lighting kit available that can be added at a later time should you decide that you need more light. Check out the ceiling height of the room. Low ceilings will limit the type of ceiling fans you can choose while high ceilings may require some modifications such as a down rod to install the ceiling fan so it is only 7 or 8 feet from the floor. Make sure that the style of ceiling fan complements the d├ęcor of the room. Ceiling fans come in a wide variety of styles and themes and you should have no trouble narrowing down your options. Finally, seriously consider a fan that can have its rotation reversed. The benefits include better cooling in the summer and better heating in the winter. Once you have made the necessary decisions with respect to the type of ceiling fan(s) you need, its time to go shopping. There are a number of places that sell ceiling fans. First, there are brick and mortar stores that specialize in lighting. Many carry only one or two brands and this will limit your choices. In addition, lighting stores usually arent large enough to have all the models displayed, which further limits your choices. Also, keep in mind that many lighting stores need to sell at or close to retail in order to pay for the overhead it takes to operate a store. Finally, you need to be cautious when dealing with salespeople. While many are conscientious and put the customers needs first, there are some that will try to push an overstocked model on you or sell you a fan that gives them a higher commission. On the positive side, when you are dealing with a local brick and mortar store, customer service is usually good and you can often get some pretty good advice from employees that are familiar with these products. I have mixed feelings about buying ceiling fans from home centers. Many home centers appeal to buyers because they believe that this is the place to get discounts and save money. While this may be true, the quality of the merchandise that is available may be the trade-off. Home centers often buy in large lots and get a good wholesale discount from the manufacturer. However, many specialize in the lower cost (and perhaps lower quality) fans. The selection is often limited and the expertise of the salespeople is often limited as well. You might get lucky and find just what youre looking for at one of these centers, but my guess is that what they have available will dictate what you will more than likely end up purchasing. The Internet has some definite advantages when shopping for ceiling fans. It also has some disadvantages. On the positive side, you can find just about every make and model on any number of websites. Because its relatively easy to list an item, many websites display everything the ceiling fan manufacturer has to offer. Most good websites will also provide specifications and other relevant information about each listing. Being sensitive to the overhead issues at brick-and-mortar stores, some manufacturers and drop shippers who wholesale to websites, add a percentage onto the wholesale prices they offer to make the website pricing somewhat more competitive. Still and all, you can usually get the best price for a specific ceiling fan on a website. Most websites make it easy to buy and many transactions can be finalized in just a few minutes. On the somewhat negative side, when you are dealing with a website, you have no face-to-face contact with the seller and so that intuitive sense of trust or not to trust is missing. In addition, while most websites have come a long way in trying to build buyer confidence in their integrity and reliability, this is sometimes still a factor. Also, it may take a week or so to get what you paid for when you order a ceiling fan online. Customer service is the final issue. When you have a problem, how do you know whether or not the website vendor will be responsive. Make sure there is a telephone number on the website that will allow you to talk to a live person. This will go a long way in building trust and getting problems resolved to everyones satisfaction.

How to Choose the Best Ceiling Fan for Your Needs! So, you may be wondering which ceiling fan is going to be the right one for you. There are a variety of different choices when it comes to ceiling fans, that it can be quite a task to pick out the one that is best for you and your home. If you are planning on purchasing ceiling fans in the near future, there are many things you need to consider. So, here are a few tips to help you pick out the best ceiling fans for your home. Fan Size First of all, when you are trying to find the best fans for your home, you will want to consider the size. Ceiling fans can be found in a variety of different sizes; however, the size of the room you are buying for will definitely influence this decision. If you are buying fans for a smaller room, then youll want to go for a smaller fan. However, for larger fans, youll need something that moves a bit more air, so a large fan, like a 50-54 inch fan, is a great choice. Noise The last thing you want in a ceiling fan is a lot of noise. Before you purchase a new ceiling fan, be sure to take the time to check the noise ratings. If you can actually test the fan and see how noisy it is. The best ceiling fans will be so quiet that youll barely even know that they are running. The Motor Type You will also find that the motor type is important when you are trying to pick out the best fan. There are two types of motors that are usually used in ceiling fans - friction driver motors and direct drive motors. Usually a direct drive motor is the best choice, since they last longer and have fewer parts that are separated. However, they do tend to be a bit more expensive, but are well worth the extra money youll pay. Lighting When picking out ceiling fans, youll need to consider whether or not you want lighting to come with the fans. Some fans come with light kits on them, while other fans do not. In some cases you may have to pick out the light kit separately as well. There are a variety of different light kits that you can choose from, and youll want to pick one that will look nice with the fan and offer plenty of light. Price If you are looking for the best ceiling fans, price is also going to be important. While you no doubt want to get a good deal, it is important to realize that you get what you pay for. Going with the cheapest fan will probably not be a great idea, but a fan that is a bit more expensive will have better features, such as remote controls, variable speeds, and a higher grade. So, you are often better of to spend a little more money for a fan that will be reliable and long lasting. No doubt choosing for the best ceiling fans for your home is important to you, and these tips can help you make the best possible choice. So, next time you are shopping for new ceiling fans, keep these simple tips in mind to help you pick out the very best.
